Connection Between New Town and Downtown
long tunnel
The Chinese island of Hanai is home to the city of Zhoushan, where four horizontal and six vertical arterial roads form an important city network. At 1,210 meters long and 20 meters wide, Gangdao Road is one of these arteries, cutting through Zhoushanās New Town. Gangdao Tunnel, an important part of the road, opened to traffic in September 2019. It connects state highway 329 with local Haitian Avenue and serves as an important connection between Zhoushan New Town and Downtown.
The tunnel skillfully fits into the landscape and truly lets drivers dive headfirst into the scenery. At 435 meters long and 15 meters wide, two 3.5 meter carriageways lead through the tunnel with footpaths on each side. Metal railings clearly separate the vehicles from the pedestrians. Energy-efficient lights ensure safe lighting in the tunnel, automatically adjusting the light level as natural light changes throughout the day.
A Blue Ribbon of Texture and Light
Exposed concrete takes center stage inside the tunnel. The tunnel entrance and ceiling have been painted blue, creating an exciting optical effect. Architect Tian Feng had this to say about his concept: āThe design for the Gangdao Tunnel draws on a nautical theme and integrates the local culture. Based on the blue of the sea, wave-like elements at the tunnel entrance snake through the tunnel on the ceiling and at eye level.ā
Like a looping ribbon, this decorative element follows travelers on the tunnel walls from the entrance to the exit. Various shades of deep blue symbolize the oceanās water lines. The blue band becomes the driverās guide to the exit.
The band was realized using elastic textured formliners from RECKLI. The precast concrete elements were poured with various components in different shapes and sizes. When the prefabricated elements were positioned on site, the various components came together to form a three-dimensional band. The surface of the blue band was designed with the help of RECKLI texture 2/602 SaĆ“ne, a symmetrical wave pattern from the RECKLI SELECT range. The detailed surface texture provides an additional optical incentive for pedestrians to use the tunnel. The band links the tunnel to Zhoushanās nautical ambience for pedestrians and drivers alike.
