The terms textured concrete and architectural concrete are often used together, but they describe different characteristics of a concrete surface.
Architectural concrete refers to concrete that is deliberately used as a design element and is associated with a pronounced design intent. It is not a separate quality or exposed concrete class, but rather the design ambition underlying a component — one that can be expressed in both smooth and structured surfaces.
Textured concrete, on the other hand, refers to the design of the surface itself. The texture can be created independently of the selected architectural concrete quality class.
A building can therefore qualify as architectural concrete while also being executed with a structured exposed concrete surface and a specific exposed concrete class. Structured concrete surfaces can be realized across different exposed concrete classes: from standard requirements up to high-quality exposed concrete of class SB4.
How Is Textured Concrete Produced?
The texture of a concrete surface is created using formliners.
Formliners are placed inside the formwork and transfer their surface pattern to the concrete during casting. Once the formwork is removed, the desired texture remains permanently visible.
The quality of the finished surface depends on several factors. In addition to the formliner itself, the formwork system, concrete mix design, compaction process, and curing all play a decisive role.
Since many of these parameters are defined during the early planning stages, textured concrete surfaces should be incorporated into the project design as early as possible.
