From Olympic Park to a Knowledge Quarter

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in East London has undergone a fundamental transformation since the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. East Bank has emerged as a new district for culture, education and innovation. Alongside institutions such as the V&A, Sadler’s Wells, the BBC and London College of Fashion, University College London (UCL) has established a new campus here.

UCL East represents the university’s largest single expansion since its foundation. Together with One Pool Street, Marshgate forms the first phase of the campus, establishing research and teaching in an area that has developed into a new centre for culture, education and science in London.

Marshgate: The Heart of UCL East

35,000 m²

Total Area

Designed by Stanton Williams and opened in 2023, Marshgate comprises approximately 35,000 square metres across eight storeys. Laboratories, workshops, learning and research spaces, as well as publicly accessible areas, are deliberately interconnected to encourage exchange between different disciplines.

At the heart of the building is the multi-storey Fluid Zone. It connects different levels and uses while creating fluid transitions between interior and exterior spaces.

A Bespoke Board-Marked Structure for Marshgate

For the characteristic exposed concrete surfaces, the architects developed a bespoke board-marked structure specifically for the project. Timber boards of different widths were selected and arranged according to defined rules. Four board widths and varying depths created variation and helped avoid noticeable repetition in the finished concrete surface.

RECKLI moulded the timber master created by the architects and used it to produce elastic formliners. Several master mould formed the basis for different formliners. Their subsequent arrangement was also carefully planned to minimise repetition of the board pattern.

In this way, the structure developed by Stanton Williams was transferred onto the large-scale concrete surfaces, becoming a distinctive feature of the Fluid Zone.

Award-Winning Architecture

Since its completion, Marshgate has received numerous architectural awards. In 2024, the building was named “Best of Best” in the Educational Buildings category at the Architecture MasterPrize.

Further recognition followed in 2026 from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). Marshgate received a RIBA London Award and was also named RIBA London Building of the Year 2026. The jury particularly recognised the building’s generous spatial qualities, openness and careful use of materials. The different concrete finishes used across the façade and within the Fluid Zone were also highlighted as characteristic elements of the architecture.

Marshgate subsequently received a RIBA National Award 2026, recognising it at national level as one of the year’s outstanding architectural projects in the UK. The awards underline the significance of the building both for the new UCL East campus and for the continuing transformation of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park into an important destination for education, culture and innovation.
