RECKLI: Working on a level playing field

In our heart, we are down-to-earth; in our head, we are open-minded and cosmopolitan. The Ruhr Valley is our home – our market is the world. As a medium-sized company, we have continually and healthily grown since our founding in 1968, and have made it to the top of the international market. We want to carry on along this path, keeping our sound judgement and efficient approach. We can only do this with the right staff.

Our employees aren’t just a means to an end; they are the lifeblood of our company. We are convinced that well-trained, satisfied employees are committed and make sound decisions. That’s why we at RECKLI place great value on the selection, management and development of our employees.

We currently employ over 100 members of staff, most of which at our Herne branch. We encourage very open and very direct communication. Typical for the Ruhr Valley, and for a medium-sized German company. But always with the utmost respect and appreciation, and always on a level playing field. We live by the oft-quoted flat hierarchy. Our doors are always open, and we approach each other directly with questions or problems, completely regardless of level or title.

This kind of togetherness doesn’t just happen – you have to work at it. Each employee, starting from the Managing Director, has to do their part. When I took over as Managing Director, it was obvious to me that more focus had to be placed on personal development. This resulted in various actions:

  • All company managers, starting from the Managing Director, have gone through complete management training.
  • We have carried out many personal and communication trainings at employee level over the last few years.
  • We now have a comprehensive yearly personal development program, with a range of options: From public speaking seminars and presentation training, to self-management and time management training.
  • We find that mixed seminar groups add an additional element, as they broaden perspectives and encourage team thinking. That’s why we always carry out training across departments and hierarchies.
  • Regular employee meetings and surveys are a matter of course for us.

These actions have seen plenty of results. However, we never see our company culture as a set state, but rather as an ongoing process. This keeps us active, and on our toes. Developing people and a company are a source of great joy for me. There are already plenty of examples of internal careers, and this will also be a point of focus over the next few years. Now more than ever, we want to create new paths for talented and committed people, coach them and support them.

We have always paid our employees a reasonable wage as a matter of course. Our connection to the IG BCE trade union also supports this. We also offer our employees social services, make sure we always have up-to-date tools, support part-time working, and strive towards a good balance between family and career. And if there’s cause for celebration, then we celebrate!

Even so, there are sometimes disagreements, or even conflicts, at RECKLI. We believe it’s impossible to completely avoid these situations. The most important thing to us is how we deal with them. We see problems as opportunities, and always want to solve them constructively. If there’s ever sand in the gears, we sit down together, talk to each other, and clear everything up. Reasonably. On a level playing field.
