Information on the restriction of diisocyanates

What was the reason for this regulation?

As reactive chemical substances, diisocyanates initially represent a source of danger for the user. In some cases, overexposure can cause an allergic reaction. Hypersensitivity to a person through contact with improper use can lead to respiratory problems, in severe cases asthma. With reduced exposure, most people experience fewer symptoms or recover completely.
Like other hazardous substances, chemical products containing diisocyanates can be handled safely if the necessary safety measures are followed and, at best, an appropriate risk management system is implemented. It is therefore crucial that the user has knowledge of the hazards and how to handle them safely.

In contrast to the starting products, fully cured polyurethanes can be considered free of diisocyanates. These are only contained in the reactive components and react with other substances (polyols, water, humidity) to form products that are themselves harmless to health.

What does this mean for users?

From 24 August 2023, all professional users of products containing diisocyanates must be trained in accordance with the requirements of Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation. This training must be completed by an EHS expert in person or in the form of e-learning and ends with an examination and the award of a certificate valid for 5 years. The certificate must be presented if required.

Various associations offer such training from February 2022. At your request, we will actively notify you as soon as a specific training document or institution is available.

We are prepared

We are preparing for the new regulations and gladly advise you on the use of our products. For further information please also see the webpages of the European isocyante producers‘ associations (ISOPA and ALIPA).

Do you have any further questions?

If required, we will be happy to advise you on available replacement products or the necessary training. Please contact your technical sales consultant for this.
